The Crew

Captain Ahielen Medina has skippered vessels since 2011, first crossing the ocean from Colombia to Panama back and forth and as of the last 6 years mostly sailing around the San Blas islands. She knows the area very well and is a great hostess.  She hails from Argentina and will make sure your stay aboard Kaya is exceptional.

First mate and chef Gaston is a professional cook also from Argentina. His easy going personality and great charm are a bonus because his food is outstanding. You will really enjoy his thoughtfully prepared meals.

We sailed on the KAYA for 5 days with Captain Ahihelen and Chef Gaston. This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I’ve sailed in Belize, but nothing compares to exploring the remote San Blas Islands, home to the Indigenous Guna people. Being welcomed into a protected cultural and natural environment was incredibly special. Local Cuna families paddled up to our boat offering fresh fish and beautiful molas. Captain Ahielen and Chef Gaston made our trip unforgettable. Ahihelen is an EXPERT captain who guided us with ease and crafted an incredible itinerary. We explored pristine beaches, swam around remote islands, and snorkeled every single day. Gaston blew us away with the food — from super fresh seafood to Argentinian grilled dishes on the beach (OMG so good), and even a homemade cake and some delicious passionfruit dessert. Their mixers and wines were absolute perfection - with nonstop offering. We had homeade hummus that knocked our socks off one night as an appetizer. We saw dolphins, manta rays, an octopus, a friendly reef shark, and so many colorful fish. The reefs were stunning, and we were lucky to have perfect weather in December. Ahihelen guded us to excellent areas for snorkeling and swimming. The crew went above and beyond in every detail — they listened to what we wanted, surprised us with thoughtful touches, and showed us the very best of San Blas. We felt like royalty. The boat was comfortable, we were catered to, fed amazingly, and treated with true warmth. It’s like camping on the water, with constant access to swim and snorkel, which we loved. We swam to islands with our fins and masks and just soaked in the wild beauty. Ahihelen and Gaston are incredibly special people. They made this trip so meaningful and so fun. I would recommend this experience to anyone who wants something rare, authentic, and completely unforgettable. If you’re thinking about it — do it. the travel to get their is long and adventurous but safe and worth it! You won’t regret it.

We stayed on the Kaya for four nights, and it was truly the experience of a lifetime. From the moment we arrived, all we had to do was breathe in the ocean air, open our hearts, and let the sun and salt water refresh our souls. Ahielen and Gaston are the perfect hosts—thoughtful, welcoming, and masters at curating each day so that relaxing feels completely effortless. The food was exceptional. Every meal featured the freshest ingredients, beautifully prepared and presented. Gaston’s warm smile and contagious energy made each moment brighter, while Ahielen’s thoughtfulness, impeccable attention to detail, and incredible skill as captain made every day’s adventure feel magical. Highlights included unforgettable snorkeling, access to pristine and remote island beaches, mesmerizing turquoise water, stargazing under unbelievable night skies, and the most epic lobster BBQ imaginable. We left with memories our family will cherish for a lifetime. Our time aboard the Kaya captured the essence of life lived as art.
