Among the many stories passed down through Guna oral tradition, few are as poetic and powerful as the tale of The Eternal Singer (Igar Igar).

In Guna cosmology, the Eternal Singer is not just a mythical figure. It is a living force, an ever-present voice that weaves together the physical and spiritual worlds. According to their tradition, this singer was the first being to give rhythm and melody to existence itself. Every element of the natural world; waves, wind, birds, footsteps.. is said to echo fragments of its original song.

The Eternal Singer’s melodies are believed to hold teachings for daily life. Guna elders say that when people listen closely to nature, they can “hear” reminders about balance, respect, and the interconnectedness of all things. This is why singers and storytellers (onmagged) hold such a sacred role: they are carriers of the song, helping the community remember its values, history, and responsibilities.

The story says that as long as the Eternal Singer’s voice continues, through chants, prayers, and the voices of new generations…the world stays in harmony. Losing the song would mean losing identity, memory, and purpose.

For the Guna, singing is not just art; it is cultural survival. Every chant passed from elder to youth is another verse added to a centuries-old melody that refuses to fade.

With each story and tradition of the Guna, we can see how their culture gives us teachings about the beautiful world we live in, and how to cherish nature and our surroundings.

You can travel with us to learn more about their culture and their magical wisdom.
