The clear waters of Gunayala: a paradise closer than you know

Updated: Apr 17

Hidden along  Panama’s Caribbean coast is one of the best-kept secrets of Central America: Gunayala, also known as the San Blas Islands. With over 365 tiny islands, Gunayala offers a raw, untouched beauty that feels like stepping into a dream.

The waters surrounding these islands are nothing short of a piece of paradise. Shallow turquoise lagoons  invite you to bury your feet in the sand and feel like you’re part of this place, with starfish, coral, and schools of tropical fish that will glide effortlessly around you. Whether you’re snorkeling among reefs, paddling between islands, or simply floating under the sun, the clarity and warmth of the sea will make you feel immersed in the beauty of this place.

What makes Gunayala truly remarkable is how accessible yet wonderfully untouched it remains. The drive to the coast takes 2.5 hours and the water taxi to the islands another 40 to 90 minutes depending on which island you're going to.  Ground transfer is the most affordable option for people visiting from the city. A quicker option is a 1-hour flight. Once there, you’ll find yourself transported to a different world.

The sailboats will take you to different virgin islands surrounded by palm trees and clear sand, no resorts or cruise ships docking with crowds. Instead, you’re greeted by the gentle rhythm of the ocean. It's a place where time slows down, and nature invites you to breathe its fresh air.

Here, simplicity becomes luxury. You will wake up to the sound of waves lapping the shore, spend your days island-hopping, and will go from learning about Guna culture and sharing with the community to snorkeling in warm, transparent waters. This is a trip where even though you’re close to the city, you will find yourself immersed in a completely different culture, way of life and environment.

The day to day is enjoying freshly caught seafood prepared by the Guna locals, sharing these meals with them on the beach, or cooked by the crew of the boat. Evenings are lit by sunsets that seem painted just for you, followed by stargazing under an infinite sky unspoiled by city lights.

The reason Gunayala feels like a true paradise is its soul—the spirit of the Guna people, who not only protect their land with pride and care, but also welcome visitors with open arms. Visiting Gunayala (or San Blas Islands) isn’t just a beach escape—it’s a rare opportunity to experience a place where culture, nature, and tranquility live in perfect harmony. It is a rare, yet beautiful opportunity to add to your travel plans if you’re visiting this part of the continent,  and it will be a unique once-in-a-lifetime experience while on your trip through Central America.
